The old phrase "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" especially applies to Carbon Monoxide. This odorless gas has been called the silent killer. Carbon Monoxide is a potentially deadly gas that can be produced by common household appliances and combustion engines. Many people think their home is safe until it is too late. Don't be a statistic, have your home tested by a certified carbon monoxide analyst.
What are carbon monoxide levels and what should I do?
Carbon Monxoide (CO) levels are measured as ppm or parts per million.
0 is always our goal
1-9 ppm is normal but should be tested.
10-34 ppm is marginal. The source should be located and repaired. These levels can especially effect small children, elderly, or persons with heart or respiratory problems.
35-99 ppm is excessive, but not initially life threatening. People living in the home might be showing symptons. Open windows, turn off appliances until levels decrease. Repair source.
Over 100 ppm is DANGEROUS. Evacuate immediately. Do not enter building until levels are under control. A trained professional must be called to repair.
Are there any possible diseases/problems due to exposure to low level CO exposure?
Oh yes, here is the list.
Agitation, anxiety, alzheimer's, apathy, appetite loss, attention loss, back pain, balance problems, body ache, bronchitis, chest pain, choking, chronic fatigue, concentration low, confusion, constipation, coolness, coordination problem, coughing spells, cramps, depression, diaphragm pain, diarrhea, disorientation, dizziness, dropping things, ear problems, emotional problems, energy loss, extremities cold, eye pain, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, flushed, forgetful, G.I. problem, hair loss, hallucinations, writing problems, headache, hearing problem, hypertension, hypoglycemia, violent illness, foggy, incontinence, insomnia, low iron level, irritable, learning problem, lethargy, libido loss, lightheaded, lips reddish, liver pain, memory loss, mood changes, muscle ache, nausea, neck pain, nerve deafness, numbness, palpitations, panic attack, paralysis, parkinson's, personality change, head pressure, shortness of breath, seasickness, seizure, shoulder pain, sinusitis, skin cherry red, skin dryness, sleepiness, SIDS, speech problem, suicidal, sweats, sore throat, tingling arms/legs, tingling lips, tinnitus, thickened tongue, tremor, twitching fingers, vertigo, vision difficulty, weakness, weight loss, word finding problem.
I have a CO detector from my local store, isn't that enough to protect my family?
No, the UL listed CO alarms available at big box stores only protect healthy adults. The first digital display begins at 30 ppm on many common alarms. Our NSI 3000 Low Level CO Monitor displays on 5 ppm to warn your family of the first sign of trouble.
I only run my heat in the winter so am I safe in the sumertime?
No because carbon monoxide can come from various sources, such as your car, oven, dryer, or hot water heater which run year round.
